Field Trial Results:

The trial lasted several weeks over multiple walks, in varying conditions, terrain and conditions.

The jacket lived up to its billing:

  • Very versatile. Can be used for hiking in sub-zero conditions, and is great throw over on peaks and at the end of the day.
  • Lightweight, yet extremely warm.
  • The cut allows for base layers, where required, and can be used over shells etc.
  • Zips worked well in all conditions.
  • The drawstrings on the cuffs hood and neck were easily accessible and did not slip when set.

Conclusion:

After numerous walks in varying conditions, the outcome shows that this jacket is pretty near a go-to jacket for some of the winter extreme conditions.

It needs to be below zero to use this when on a day trek, but in those conditions it works well and has good breathable characteristics.  I found it very useful when you needed an insulated throwover on summits when the wind was up.  It was also most useful at the end of the day when you can get chilled pretty quickly.

As a day-to-day jacket, it was also useful, when you are out in the cold but not doing anything too energetic.
