Fenwick to Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland Coast Path – Stage 6.

Walking the magnificent Northumberland Coastal Path from Cresswell to Berwick-upon-Tweed.  This is episode 6 of 6.

Produced in partnership with the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and Northumberland Coast Path.

Overview.

The Northumberland coast offers some of the finest coastal walking in Europe. The Northumberland Coast Path follows this stunningly beautiful coastline for 100 kilometres (62 Miles) from Cresswell in the south to Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north. Alongside sandy beaches, over rocky headlands, past dramatic castles and through attractive coastal villages, the Northumberland Coast Path offers a constantly changing landscape which is a pleasure to explore.

Stage 5 –Fenwick to Berwick upon Tweed (12.5 miles)

We leave Fenwick and head east to the A1.  Take great care when crossing the road.  We follow the dual signed path (Northumberland Coast Path and St Cuthbert’s Way) to the Holy Island causeway.  Our route takes us through fields, down rural paths and roads.

At the road crossing to Holy Island (Video 5:50), we continue north along the coast, through a marsh area and over the estuary bridge (Video 7:30) before picking up the dunes again, and the beach which continues to the horizon.  Continuing north there is an option to follow the dunes or pull inland slightly towards Goswick.  This was the route taken in the video.  Passing the Goswick Golf Club we continue along the side of the north-south rail line passing Cocklawburn Dunes Nature Reserve and Cocklawburn Beach on our way (Video 10:20).

As we approach Berwick upon Tweed we get our first sight of the Berwick Lighthouse (Video 11:25) at the end of the pier, marking the end of the Northumberland Coast Path.  We drop down to the promenade along the side of Spittal Beach (Video 11:45).  Following the estuary, on the southern bank, we cross the Tweed via the Old Bridge.  Once on the northern side of the bridge we turn immediately right towards the old anchor on the quayside (Video 12:35), and the conclusion of what has been a memorable walk from Creswell to Berwick upon Tweed.
