Morpeth

Bustling, historic Morpeth combines traditional market town-charm with stylish highstreets, modern shopping centres and upscale bars. Quaint, cobbled streets, quirky farmers’ markets and classic general markets give the town an irresistible antiquity and showcase its unique heritage and beauty.

Turn by Turn Directions

We start our walk at the car park, next to the bus station, although you could just as easily start at Morpeth’s train station.  If you are driving you will need to use the disk parking system, which after purchasing your parking disk for £1.00, your parking will be free on future visits.

We leave the bus station and walk through Sanderson Arcade (Video 1:15).  Upon leaving, we turn right and head towards the Clock Tower (Video 1:45), which dates back to 1604.  Turning right we head up Newgate St.  After around 500mtr we turn left on the B6343 Mitford Road, and turn left again after 50mtr, then cross the River Wansbeck , with some great views (Video 2:50)

Continuing along the side of the Wansbeck, we pass the stepping stones (Video 3:40), always worth a walk over if conditions prevail.  We then pass under Old Gate Bridge towards Carlisle Park (Video 5:00), with lots to see and do, if you wish.

Our next POI is Ha Hill (Video 6:30), where you get a great view across Morpeth dating back to 1080, and the surrounding countryside.  Shortly after leaving Ha Hill we climb up to Morpeth Castle Gate (Video 7:00) dating back to the 13th Century.

Leaving the Castle Gate behind us, we pass the Cenotaph (Video 7:17).  Continuing we reach the William Turner Gardens and the Emily Davison Statue (Video 7:45) who was a suffragette and died after throwing herself under the Kings horse at the Epsom Races.  On leaving the gardens, we pass the Morpeth Court House dating back to 1862.

Leaving Morpeth, passing the Railway Station (Video 8:40), which is another possible start point for the walk.

Heading out into the surrounding countryside we pick up a small track (Video 9:35) signed for Whorral Bank.  As we head down the path we pass by Clark’s Bog Nature Reserve (Video 10:05), before trekking over the fields and crossing the rail line (Video 11:30).  On our way to some pleasant wooded walking, before we pick up the River Wansbeck once again (Video 12:00).

This is a stunning section of the walk, where we can take in some beautiful scenery, wildlife and the flora and fauna.  Passing the weir on the way to the conclusion of what has been a very relaxing and easy walk, which has so much to offer.
