Northumberland National Park walk - Humbleton, Akeld Valley and Gains Law

Beautiful views across the Northumberland National Park getting up onto the moors with some breath taking scenery.

We head off from Hambleton by walking up the road with a no entry sign, we shortly come to an information post showing some of the local history, at this point we turn right and follow the path along the lower fells, passing through gates as we continue.

After around 20 minutes we come to a small wooded area and pass this with the wall and the woods on our right.  Continuing with the wall on our right we will be walking down into the valley with the farm building ahead of us and pass over a small burn.  At this point we bear left and climb up the fells along the side of Akeld Valley, passing a small wooded are on the right, which has been devastated by Storm Arwen, continuing along the path we come to a gate in front of the next wooded area, on our left we see some directional markers, at this point we follow the St Cuthbert’s Way.  At the next gate we need to keep straight on and not bear right.

When we come to the wall we bear left across the fell with the wall on our right.  We will be walking across the fells with the wall right and then head through a gate where the wall will then be on our left for the rest of the walk over the fells.  It is worth taking the time to keep looking at the scenery, as it is beautiful.

As we continue we start to decent passing Coldberry Hill on our right, coming to a series of gates, this is where we leave St Cuthbert’s Way and follow the public footpath trail back into Hambleton, and concluding our walk once again.

Enjoy your walk and don’t forget to take o copy of the route and the planning overview.
