April 6, 2023Hexham, Juniper, Dipton Woods & Dilston Circular Walk.
This is such a tranquil walk with some varied walking. We start in the Historic Market Town of Hexham, before heading south with some excellent views across Tyne Valley, before reaching the picturesque village of Juniper. Heading along the ‘A Pennine Journey’ path, we have many bridge crossings, with a great backdrop. Once we have explored Dipton Woods we head towards Dilston with a great view of Corbridge, before our return journey to Hexham.

Turn by Turn Directions
After parking up (Google PIN available on start point link below), next to the River Tyne, we head up and into Hexham itself, where you can explore Hexham Abby (Video 1:30). Leaving Hexham we utilise a pathway up to the fields, where we have some great views across the Tyne Valley and Hexham (Video 3:50).
Following the route we come to the picturesque Hole House (Video 5:42). We come to West Dipton Burn, and the route we take, is to the north of the burn towards the bridge and Dipton Mill Inn. We then continue south across the fields passing farms and wooded areas, with a great backdrop of the magnificent Northumberland countryside.
We arrive at the picturesque Juniper village (Video 8:10). After c400m turn right and head down towards the burn. When the walk was completed, the route along the side of the burn was not clearly defined. We arrive at the bridge, which is supported by much scaffolding (Video 8:45). Following the route we take to the roads for a short while, crossing Cragnook Well (Video 9:22). The next stage of the walk is calming, as we follow wooded paths and cross over many wooden bridges (Video 10:10). It really is worth taking some time to savour this stage of the walk.
Arriving at the B5606, we enter Dipton Woods and reach Lightwater Cottages. We need to skirt the cottages (Video 12:07). Be careful as the path is not clear at this point, using your maps and OS GPS App would be a good idea. We then have a very pleasant 1.5 mile walk through the woods, with a great wildlife sounds to accompany us on our way. Exiting the woods, we follow the road for a short section (Video 13:50), before heading down to Snokoehill Plantation. On leaving the wooded area, we have a good view of Corbridge (Video 14:30). Although this walk does not pass through Corbridge, it is worth taking the time to visit.
On our way to Dilston, we need to walk along the road, before passing over a tributary to the River Tyne. We turn left and head up towards a small waterfall. Following the path we come to an information board of Dilstons history (Video 14:50). Following a well signed path we head west through Park Wood and Cock Wood, passing Dukes House on our way. Turning right (Video 16:05) we follow the River Tyne Trail on our way back to Hexham. We conclude our walk on the banks of the River Tyne.
This has been a really peaceful walk, with some great variation and the tranquillity of the walk was good for the soul.
