Turn by Turn Directions

Day 1 covers stages 1 and 2 of Isaac’s Tea Trail.  Starting in Allendale Town, you leave the square and head down the road with the Allendale on your left (see Video at 3:00); heading over the bridge crossing the River East Allen, you will see your first sign for Isaac’s Tea Trail (see Video at 5:50).  You will find that the path is well signed in general along the trail.  You now head south along the west bank of the River East Allen.

The well-signed trail will take you through fields and drop down into wooded glades (see Video at 7:00).  After pulling back from the River East Allen, you cross a single-track road (see Video at 8:40) and pass Pry Hill Farm.  Next, you pass a footbridge, say goodbye to River East Allen, and continue along the signed path before reaching Rowentree Stob Bastle (see Video at 9:20), built in the 17 Century.  Continuing along the signed path, you come to a single-track road and head left (south), at the T junction, you head right and now start your journey across the moors and Allendale Common by passing through a gate (see Video at 11:50).  This is a delightful section of the trail which has some great views along the way (see Video at 13:15), where we follow the posts.

Passing the high point at Carrshield Moor (see Video at 14:45) you have a great view of the path ahead, where you drop down into Coalcleugh and pass Sunnyside before our next gentle ascent (see Video at 15:55).  You continue to follow the signs, pass into Cumbria, before reaching Nenthead (see Video at 19:45), which concludes stage 1.

Stage 2 starts as you leave Nenthead heading north, again picking up the path signs (see Video at 20:35).  The path takes you past a fascinating garden with a number of miniature houses (see Video at 21:00).  This final section of the day is relatively easy walking and follows the path of the River Nent.  Following the river trail, we come to a picturesque wooded area (see Video at 22:15).  Upon exiting the woods, you have a panoramic view up and down the valley.

We cross the River Nent at Nenthall Bridge (see Video at 23:15).  After crossing the bridge, you pick up the path on the west bank, and the tranquillity of this section does the soul some good; the tranquillity is most welcome.  You pass over the River Nent again at Foreshield Bridge (see Video at 24:20).  Now you pick up the single-track road to Blagill before a steep descent down the road, passing over the Rover Nent for the final time.  The final section of the day’s walk is one to savour, taking in the beauty of the river, the wildlife and the waterfalls along the way.

You now reach Alston and the conclusion of a great day’s walking.  It is time to stop and reflect on the day and get a good night’s rest and the start of day 2, which covers stages 3 and 4 of Isaac’s Tea Trail.
