Field Trail Findings:
PWW undertook field trials with walks from 5 to 15 miles, covering around 50 miles in total. This was across Hills, Fells, and Trails.
The trousers were used in varying weather conditions:
Cold – the trousers do not directly provide warmth, but they do provide good windshield
Wind – the trousers performed well in windy conditions, acting as a good windshield.
Warm – this is where the trousers come into their own. As long trousers, they have plenty of room to let your legs breathe. When it is too warm you can convert them into shorts.
Rain – the trousers perform well in light rain. In heavy rain, they can take on water. This said they dry well. One concern relates to the thigh pocket in wet conditions when water is dripping from your jacket. The thigh pocket creases and water collects (see video ????)
Main points from the field trial:
Stretch Material – this works well in all conditions, there was no rubbing on the skin from the material or seams.
When crossing streams and becks, and jumping over crags trousers performed well.
Pockets – the zips and access performed well.
There was no water ingress in wet conditions. The only concern, as mentioned above, relates to the thigh pocket, in wet conditions.
Shorts – the stretch in the material meant that you could convert them into shorts whilst wearing walking shoes, although this was not possible with walking boots. A zip at the base of the leg could improve this.
The shorts themselves worked well and there was no chaffing or restrictions noticed.
Additional features – I found the glasses wipe very useful, particularly for my camera lenses.
Overall findings – the trousers performed well. The main characteristics that stood out were:
- The overall comfort of the trousers/shorts.
- The durability of the material.
- Material stretch.
- Pocket access and zips.
- Glasses wipe
Possible areas for improvement – when in heavy rain conditions the water collects from your jacket in the crease above the thigh pocket. To convert the trousers to shorts, in the field, having a zip at the base of the trouser leg would be an advantage.
