Turn by Turn Directions
After parking up at the National Trust Car Park (Google PIN available on start point link below), we head over the bridge and start our walk down the west side of the River Allen. The immediate tranquillity of the walk to come is even obvious at this stage. We pass through a well-defined track in Morralee Woods (Video 1:50), before heading over some open area on our way to Plankey Mill. The river is a constant backdrop for us with some great views.
Upon reaching Plankey Mill (Video 2:10), we have the footbridge ahead of us, for this walk we need to stay on the west bank of the Allen, the walking is very tranquil and easy. As we continue along the banks of the river we head through a wooded area and climb slightly, which allows for some elevated views of the river (Video 4:10). We continue until our path leads uphill towards Staward Peel, it is worth taking some time to take in this 13th Century site (Video 4:50).
Leaving, we head south through Stawardpeel Wood (Video 6:30), and some interesting elevated trails cut into the hillside (Video 7:00). We come to Cupola Bridge (Video 8:00) and head along the road passing Mashall’s Haugh, and turn right before reaching Burnmouth (Video 9:20). This then takes us up onto fields, with some great panoramic views across Northumberland, from the Roman Wall and down the Allan River Valley (Video 10:00).
Our path then takes us past Huntershield Farm and through the picturesque Kingswood Cleugh (Video 10:40). After passing Kingswood, and crossing the fields we arrive at the ancient woodland of Briarwood Bank (Video 12:35), which takes us back down to the River Allen (Video 13:20) and the bridge at Plankey Mill. We follow the trail along the west side of the river, and the views continue (Video 14:00), before we conclude this very tranquil and fulfilling walk back to the car park.
