June 23, 2022Walking The Cheviot horseshoe route via Hedgehope Hill.
A stunning walk on top of The Cheviot Hills, with challenging winds and leg sapping terrain, that said what a great walk.
Langleeford Valley to Hedgehope Hill.
After parking your car (see start location link below), we cross over a small stream and follow the sign post for Hedgehope Hill (South) towards the wooded area, and then over the small wooden footbridge. We immediately start to climb up the fells, where we are quickly rewarded with panoramic valley views. We head up the signed path towards Housey Crags and Long Crags. It is worth climbing up on top of Housey Crags for the magnificent view (Video 5:20). From here we head South West towards Hedgehope Hill. The path way is well defined and you cannot miss the summit of Hedgehope at 714mtr (2342ft), we have a climb of around 300mtr (984ft) to reach the summit.
When on the summit you have a delightful panoramic view of the walk in its entirety, worth taking a few minutes to take it in. (Video 9:00)
Hedgehope Hill to The Cheviot On leaving Hedgehope Hill, we head West on the path towards Comb Fell. The slope is gentle on the foot. As we head down the slope the terrain underfoot becomes boggy, so good footwear is needed, especially in the winter months.
After we leave Comb Hill, the path deteriorates again, with large deep peat bogs. You will need to take care and it is advised to have good footwear (ideally with a waterproof lining). During this stage of the walk we keep the wood post wire fence on our left. This will direct us towards the head of the valley and the climb up to Cairn Hill. Once we are on the northern side of the valley, the path underfoot improves. If you were to take the route through the Valley (Video 11:50) you would join the path heading to The Cheviot at this point.
As we reach Cairn Hill we are welcomed by a large Cairn, as well as signage from the Pennine Way. The path is now clearly visible (Video 13:00) as we head North East towards The Cheviot summit
The Cheviot to Langleeford Valley. As we leave the trig point on top of The Cheviot, we continue along the paved path, heading North East. After we head over the style we continue down the slope, with the wooden post wire fence on our left. The initial decent is covered in stone and some scree, some caution is required. Once this descent is completed, the remaining walking is very manageable. As we pass over Scald Hill, we continue descending and come to a single post on the path (Video 15:50), where we take a right fork and head down the slopes towards the wooded area by Langleeford Farm. As we follow the path, we skirt the tree coppice area on our right, before joining the road where we turn left and head back along the road to our start point Enjoy, what is a fantastic walk.
Direct Route up The Cheviot
Once we leave the car, heading along the single track road for around 400mtr, and come to a sign on our right, which we need to follow (Video 1:50). Once through the gate, bear left and head up the slopes.
Valley Route up The Cheviot
Leaving the car, head along the single track road where we pass Langleeford Farm. Continuing along the road, eventually coming to the head of the valley at Scotsman’s Knowe (Video 1:50), where we pick up the signed path towards Cairn Hill (Video 11:50). | |
